Feed Your Head with Teniente Castillo - Sunday 21st January image

Teniente Castillo

He’s the label Manager of Play Pal Music (Madrid, Spain) since 2012 and DJ with over 20 years at the controls. This guy has been involved in all kinds of musical projects and events close to his native Madrid, with appearances at venues like ‘Wonky’, ‘W!cked’ and ‘Play Pal Nights’ as well as further afield too where he’s graced the likes of La Dame Noir’s Club in Marseille, Berlin’s ‘Kater Blau’ and some of the finest Mexican clubs like M.N. Roy.

He’s become part of the rarefied group of DJ’s equally comfortable playing at 70 bpm or 120 bpm, without losing his edge or his dancefloors!

Teniente’s production skills have resulted in releases and remixes on labels like Ombra INTL, Tici Taci, Nein, Playground or his own imprint Play Pal Music. His portfolio of sound has been supported by seriously respected artists in their own right like The Hacker, Ivan Smagghe, Tim Sweeney, Curses and Marvin & Guy to name a few…

As manager of Play Pal Music, he’s got a track record of running a high quality label with an equally impressive history of releases over the past 5 years, many of which are regular features on FYH.. the more observant regular listeners will know this, you others will just have to nod and pretend you know.

Given it’s the 5th birthday of Play Pal Music, we thought we’d ask Teniente a few questions ahead of his guest mix for the show as well…

Q. What plans do you have for Play Pal Music 5th Anniversary?

A. We are doing a party at one of my favourite clubs in Madrid, called Cafe Berlin and we are having Curses as guest, so I’ll be playing with him that night. Very excited about the whole celebration. Besides that, we are planning some other parties at other cities and countries but I can’t yet talk about it… we’re still in conversations with different promoters and clubs and looking forward to announce things very soon.

Q. What should we expect from your guest mix and what is your favourite track?

A. Many great tracks, impossible to pick just one. A lot of new stuff, a club oriented mix, from 112 to 115 bpm, synths, guitars, darkness and fat basses.

Q. Which DJs do you hold in high esteem, and why?

A. Apart from the Hutchinson Brothers (of course) there are many of them, there are two dj’s I’ve played with a few times that really felt a very good connection with, like when you don’t have to talk or say much, just play one track after another and everything fits perfect and those are Damon Jee and Phred La dame Noir. Also the guys from Mushrooms Project, still remember the first time we invited them to a venue we had in Madrid in year 2009 - 2010, these guys blew our mind and I’m very much looking forward to play with Curses, it’d be the first time and I know for sure it’s going to be a good one too.

Q. What is it that you love about what you do?

A. Probably when making music, the fact that you are creating something that didn’t exist a couple of hours ago. That feeling can’t be compared to anything else for me. I’ve been djing for more than 20 years so have felt the adrenaline of connecting with the people many times but to me, nothing compared with creating something, also the passion you put into doing something you love, is also very powerful, it’s like reloading yourself with the best energy possible, every day.

Q. What are your plans for 2018

A. Making music, looks like playing at some exciting clubs in countries I haven’t visited before and focusing and developing new areas of the label.

Q. Saturday night or Sunday morning?

A. I’d say it depends on the moment of the year but in general I’m more a Saturday night person, even if it means staying at home and watch a movie, I like more a good plan for Saturday night.

Q. If we could give you just one special power what would you choose and why?

A. Either living longer like superman and getting to know and enjoy a lot of stuff in the future or being able to jump to any place at any moment like in the movie ‘Jumper’.. A lot of many different uses.. (don’t be greedy, we said one only!)

Q. What is best on a bacon sandwich, red or brown sauce? (its a FYH theme…)

A. Haha well, bacon sandwich is not as common in Spain as in the UK but defo red sauce.

And finally, we saw you’ve recorded a new mix for your ‘Dancin’ below 100 bpm’ series this week.

Q. Where does the love for low bpm music come from and why did you decide to start the series?

A. I’ve always loved low bpm music… I remember many years ago buying vinyls just because they had a single low bpm track that I loved. Back in those days there were not as many tracks to play and mix them with, but for me those tracks were too good not to buy, so I kept on buying over the years… Eventually digital arrived and it fed my passion even more, as the volume of this kind of tracks released increased considerably… So I decided that instead of just listening to them at home, I’d start doing mixes, with tracks under 100 bpm, and give them some proper use. That’s why I started the mix series and that’s why I named it ‘Dancin’ below 100 bpm’.

“Its always pleasure to catch up with you Teniente, thanks, and we love having you as part of the show… ”

Come and join us at FYH this Sunday between 11:00 and 13:00 and wish Play Pal a happy 5th birthday too!
