A global and common problem, affecting many of us, it is not a disease or an illness, and yet many of us will experience it. Some may have it and be unaware of what it is.
An occupational hazard of DJs, musicians, producers, sound engineers, the armed forces, construction workers. A risk in some sports, and spreading it wings to the classroom teacher. In fact anyone exposed to loud sounds are at risk.
Are we ringing any bells here? Any humming, hissing, whistling or buzzing? A sound that only you can hear, either in one ear, both ears, or in the head, without any external source, often referred to as Head noise, commonly known as Tinnitus, originating from the Latin word to ring. Causes, of Tinnitus include, stress, anxiety, hearing loss and exposure to loud sounds.
There are millions of Tinnitus sufferers worldwide. You are not alone.
The World Health Organisation now state that 50% of hearing related problems worldwide could be prevented with simple preventive methods.
Frequent exposure to loud sounds will have some effect unless protected. As part of and as well as your ear protection, reduce listening times, lower your volume on your personal audio device and give yourself a break.
Understanding Tinnitus is very important in helping yourself deal and manage it
Should you feel you are experiencing Tinnitus your first port of call is your GP. There is no cure yet, but research is ongoing. There are also plenty of support groups worldwide and therapies available.
