About this Kane FM story
Rubens King works as an armed forces caseworker for young people, helping people find training, work experience, volunteering, and paid work. He also writes giving advice on mental health issues to tackle stigma and make conversations about mental health normal. Here, he gives some suggestions on how to explore creativity and self-expression through music.
Kane FM has a community-oriented venue at the YMCA Guildford which hosts the Mind Waves project supporting young people 14+ to learn production and broadcasting techniques, digital DJ skills, experience in radio, arts awards, building confidence and finding your voice. The main broadcasting studio is at the Surrey University campus.
Creative freedom, self-expression and personality are important areas of our lives. One hobby which can be cathartic is music. For example, playing an instrument, listening to music, beatboxing, singing, being in a band, choir and festivals. Music is arguably a universal language true to all human beings despite culture, race, or age. Music is the binding factor which help cultivate relationships and communicate through rhythm.
Music can create bonds. Harmony within genres, connection between people across all walks of life through the globe. Technology has allowed us to engage with music in new ways. Sharing a tune to a loved one in a different country is amazing. Music connects us all.
Music adds a flavour to life. For example, to exercise, to free time, to work. Music adds value to our everyday living. Every part of music is special, the creation (ideas), the production (ups and downs), the delivery (sharing a message). These notes record human experience. Music is communication. Music can help us see new perspectives.
