About this Kane FM story
Back in 2021, I started my role as a Kickstart Apprentice for Kane FM, as part of the Government’s recent scheme that launched in 2020. The Kickstart Scheme’ was set in motion to create new jobs, and offer work experience to young people during the Pandemic.
Having left my old job in December 2020 to pursue a different career, this was quickly put to a halt as the Government announced yet another lockdown…
Kane FM is very recognised In my house, as my dad happens to be one of the many talented DJs on the station. Therefore, when searching for part-time work through the Kick Start Scheme, applying for Kane FM just seemed right!
The station had recently created a sub-group called ‘Citizen Kane’. Primarily made up of young volunteers who focused on the local community, environmental issues, creating content for social media, and of course - music!
In March 2021 I officially started my position as an ‘Editorial Assistant’ on the Citizen Kane team. Working around 25 hours a week, my main focus was the ‘Positive News Bulletins’. These are 1 minute-long news bulletins promoting positive themes, local businesses, community work, awareness days, and well… positivity!
I was also lucky enough to have the opportunity of recording some of my very own positive news bulletins in the studio. By expanding my skill set and learning the process of voice recordings, I was able to produce my own positive news bulletins to go out on the radio. As well as getting familiar with Audacity, a digital audio editing software.
Being a Kickstart Apprentice has surprised me in so many ways! I have always enjoyed writing, however, had never thought of the possible progression it could lead to, such as journalism.
Throughout my experience, I have thoroughly enjoyed researching local businesses, and even having the opportunity to interview them for articles, which have been featured on the Kane FM website - as well as posted on Instagram.
I have loved my time as a Kickstart Apprentice for Kane FM. I have acquired many new skills, and it enabled me to work closely with the Citizen Kane team to efficiently produce high-quality content, for both the radio and social media. I continue to work closely with the Kane FM team as I have continued my role of writing the positive news bulletins! Thank you to Jenniann (Community Participation Director) and the rest of Kane FM for giving me this opportunity.
