Darkness and upbeat hope
LUPUS (Latin for wolf) is Alex Wolfe the 20-year-old British rapper & producer based in Guildford, Surrey. He’s in Year 1 of Production at the Academy of Contemporary Music, and has big plans for the future.
A keyboard and guitar player from a young age, LUPUS began writing lyrics which progressed into rapping and producing.
His influences range all the way from early Arctic Monkeys, Hendrix to Gangstarr, Jehst and the Prodigy.
Although originally from an unknown background, LUPUS has spent time abroad most notably in Madrid, Spain. Today he has recently returned to his mother country, the UK, with stories of what he calls ‘the forest path’.
His music explores the human condition and psyche, whilst simultaneously projecting images and telling stories of the so-called forest path. “El lobo esta por el bosque.”
His unique sound mixes a combination of Spanish and English rap with a mesmerising result.
He has been working on collaborations the artists Mylo, Strategi & Jessrain, as well as featuring on SO:1 artist Bi0ch3mic’s new mixtape “Smoking With Friends” released on ‘4/20’ 2017.
After the owners of small venues in Barcelona, such as Freedonia, heard his music, LUPUS was invited out to play in Barcelona in March.
“Playing in Barcelona was surreal as f*&k, as I’ve only been gigging since September.”
LUPUS recalls- “The show itself was sick, but not everything went to plan in the run-up. We were also invited to play at a weed club (Spain’s version of Amsterdam’s coffeeshops), a couple days before the Freedonia show. We turned up and they didn’t have any mics and we couldn’t even hook up a laptop to the mixer because it was so old. So I had to tell them we couldn’t play, but it’s cool- everyone just sat and got super high instead.”
Where can you catch LUPUS? In Guildford he gigs at Bar 13, the Star, Boileroom and at KOMO.
“Komo was my favourite. Outside of Guildford I have played in London, at The Bedford. So my reach isn’t that far at the moment”
What can we expect from LUPUS in the future? LUPUS is focusing on music at the moment and working on his very first EP “The Forest Path Pt I” that will be dropping soon (release date TBC).
