Rosamund Community Garden is a well-appreciated place in Guildford, where local people can come together to grow vegetables in tune with nature. Located at Pewley Downs - just off of Longdown Road, this community Garden has become a popular space for locals to enjoy a spot of friendly communal gardening.
The garden is named after Rosamund Arvidsson, who lived with her 2 children in a house at the top of Longdown Road. To protect that bit of chalk downland from development she purchased 19 acres, which had a history of growing wheat and more recently being cut for hay. Her son and daughter are working with Guildford Environmental Forum and Surrey Wildlife Trust, to secure it in the best interests of wildlife and to help nurture, what everybody agrees, is a peaceful and beautiful place.
With many upcoming projects this spring, they have already welcomed the structure to - what will soon become - the Hub. In 2020 the Rosamund Garden Community was awarded grant funding to build a structure at the garden which will be used as a shelter, meeting place, classroom, and venue. The structure, made by Roger “Fudge” Mead, will be an original design of a laminate, lattice frame covered with wattle and daub and planted with wildflowers.
In parallel with the Hub project, the many volunteers are also currently busy building a sustainable compost loo. Made with Willow, the compost loo is one of the most eco-friendly toilets to exist.
These community projects are open to anybody that would like to get involved! It offers the opportunity to learn how to build with these traditional techniques and materials.
