Kane Fm newest project called ‘Changing the Community’ series shares with us listeners a collection of positive storytellers, spoken word artists, comedy writers or speakers to tell their ‘change’ stories accompanied by a Trance DJ for a live music mash-up. To create a storytelling journey that will change the community, so us listeners, no matter where we are, can feel connected.
Esme, the creative mind behind ‘changing the community’ project, thought about the idea when she participated in a workshop once, where there was an MC sharing an inspiring story over trance music. “The build up was so electric, our bodies merged into one. I wanted to recreate this feeling, where trance music is played to enhance the stories being shared on the radio” remarks Esme.
In this interview she speaks with the mastermind behind the music tracks, Tom Sliwinski aka Dj Automix.
What is your Dj journey?
From college I had one or two mates that worked in radio, I’ve always been into music and have a musical background but wanted to find somewhere I could carry that on my passions. I went to a college with other people with learning disabilities. The teachers put me in touch with a music college in Brighton. A couple of years later the friends I made from that college got me into dance music. I was recommended I get in touch with Rob Loco, who’s well known in the DJ community, having worked at Guildfest, Ministry of Sound, Burning Man and Ibiza. He taught me the fundamentals of Djing. I still wanted to do a bit of production so I bought my first decks in ‘Guildford sound and light’, buying Newmark CD j’s. I contacted Fresh Approach Tuition owner- Johnny Parker, aka Dj threshold who tutored me. He started helping me make my first track and with my performance skills too. Logic and Ableton are the software I use. I find this art form very therapeutic.
Where did Dj automix come from?
The fact that I have autism and i’m called Tom, but it just came to me one day
What do you do with KaneFM?
I’m a volunteer, going through the Youth Project with Jennanne. Then I helped Craig do visuals and sound at Haslemere Fringe for Scouting for Girls performance.
How did you hear about changing the community project?
Craig reached out, as I play trance music.
Talk me through the music process for JoJo’s track?
Track was referenced from Skyfire by Shogun. The vocals that jojo recorded were spoken so that would partner well with this vibe. Intergalactic, cosmic, she references this dystopian world, so of that element of that coming through the music, futuristic buildup from the skywalk track.
Talk me through the music process for Wizzis track?
I was going to make a track like Matt Bukowskii ‘Racing Mind’ as a reference but decided that Wizzis words were too calmly for this vibe, as her mental health is a lot better and her mind is a lot slower. The build up of the trance track creates excitement and the feeling of overcoming obstacles into euphoria.
