Tinnitus Awareness Week – 6th – 10th February 2023 – Head Noise Part X

A sound or noise that only you can hear in either one or both ears or it feels as if it is in the head when there are no outside sources for this sound/noise.  If ringing, buzzing or whistling sounds are familiar to you, it could be that you are suffering from Tinnitus – derived from the Latin word meaning to ring – and often referred to as Head Noise.

Known causes are stress, hearing loss, infection, anxiety and exposure to loud sounds, including everyday traffic.

It is neither a disease nor illness yet it is common and affects many people worldwide, including children.

Many of us will experience it unaware of what it is – It could just come and go or go on.  Some can live with it whilst it can affect the quality of the daily lives of others.

Tinnitus is an occupational hazard in many careers such as: DJs; musicians; sound engineers; construction workers; emergency services; military personnel; agricultural and factory workers; dentists; teachers; even some sports.  Also at risk is anyone exposed to loud sounds in various forms without protection, as well as those not reducing their volume and listening times.  Noise exposure is the volume of sound and the length of time it goes on.

Understanding Tinnitus is very important in helping deal and manage it, so should you feel you maybe experiencing Tinnitus, please do check in with your GP.

Research is ongoing as well as support and various therapies.

“To warn and soothe us, our very own listening device that is so vital in understanding the world, around us.”

This year Tinnitus UK (formally known as British Tinnitus Association) takes on the prevention and protection of those working and living in noisy environments, which puts hearing at risk.  Feel free to check the links as well as the invaluable information and support regarding Tinnitus.
