UHURU are the 21-year old electronic duo consisting of producing/singer-songwriter Connor Daniel and guitar/keys player Rob Jones, producing the result of smooth synth sounds, heavy bass lines and dramatic drops.
Originally from Southampton, the boys’ are the two surviving members, having to step up and replace the originally 5 piece, then 4 piece, and now a 2 piece band. Connor sings, uses a sample pad, keys, and sample launch, with Rob also on the keys, guitar and drum pad.
However no one could believe this has slowed the band down, and in 2016 UHURU were nominated for in the ‘Best Electronic Act’ category for the Unsigned Music Awards (UMA’S). In an interview with Smashed Vinyl, they said….
“We didn’t realise how big it was and I was like “oh sick,” but then I properly looked and realised it was 5000+ acts and we got through to the last 4 nominees” (Connor)
U H U R U (pronounced ‘oo-hoo-roo’) is the Swahili word for freedom.
“As well being half Kenyan, we also think freedom describes our music well, as we have real eclectic tastes in music and this all contributes to our style.” (Connor)
Their genre is future/ 2step with a style similar to Years and Years and Disclosure. Their tunes consist of “catchy vocal melodies and hook lines with guitar & synth”, blended together to create such an in-synch dynamic energy on stage which never fails to get the crowd bouncing.
Connor recalls growing up on Michael Jackson, loads of Quincy Jones and soul music which influence on his producing style. Today Justin Timberlake is a massive influence for vocals. Rob believes he has a more indie style such as Primal Scream and the Stone Roses.
Currently, UHURU are focusing on writing, writing, writing to give them a good cash of tunes and album content to hit the road and get playing live by the end of the year.
Where can you catch UHURU? So far UHURU have announced to be performing at Peckham Rye Music Festival on the 15th May.
