This next week’s World Beats show features an exclusive mix from Oreku, co-founder of Toronto’s Stereo Ferment label. Oreku produces tropically-infused psychedelic floor-filling electronica and his recent track ‘Slow Ya Boobook’ came to our attention via NYP Records and its inclusion on their recent Tropical Beats compilation. Oreku’s originally from Australia, but has been based in Canada for the last few years and he tells us that he wanted to start making some tracks that reflect his homeland. The Boobook is a type of owl in Australia and the track features within it a pitched down sample of the bird. In our opinion it’s the standout track on the compilation and has helped raise the profile of the producer, who already has an impressive set of releases under his belt including the ‘ia ia ia’ EP from last November. The EP is a collection of hard hitting four-on-the-floor disco jams that draw their melodic inspiration from Kabyle folk of Algeria, Baul folk of West Bengal India and radio recordings from Indonesia. Oreku set up Stereo Ferment with fellow musician Coy Haste, also based in Toronto, who aswell as being an established producer in his right is also the drummer for Caribou’s live band. Coy Haste’s recent track ‘West Plains’ is a World Beats favourite and is taken from his third EP ‘Apicultura’ which was released on Stereo Ferment in February. The EP is an instrumental interpretation of a San folk origin story from the Kalahari Desert. Modern electronic production with afro synths, traditional marimba and chopped up rural folk recordings. ‘West Plains’ features some astounding live drumming from the producer.
