World Beats with V.B.Kühl (Tru Thoughts)

This week’s World Beats show features an exclusive mix from Frankfurt based producer V.B.Kühl who together with Morocco’s Rabii Harnoune released one of our favourite albums of 2020 on Brighton’s Tru Thoughts imprint.  Fusing traditional North African Gnawa music with a modern club aesthetic, the pair unleashed their ‘Gnawa Electric Laune’ LP on the world last May to critical acclaim following the release of singles ‘Traveller’ and ‘Baniya’.

The record has become a staple of the World Beats show and the various remixes which have followed have taken the project into even more exciting territories with notable re-workings from Glyn Bigga Bush (one half of Rocker’s Hi Fi + the man behind Magic Drum Orchestra) and avant-garde Italian producer sUb_modU.

V.B.Kühl describes himself as a groove addict and this is made abundantly clear when you listen through his impressive catalogue of releases. He caught the attention of DJ Shadow with his remixing of the tracks ‘Scale It Back’ and ‘No Rock n Roll Dream’ in 2010, which would later lead to two commissioned remixes by Tru Thoughts in 2016 and 2017.

It was his infectiously jazzy broken beat mix of Anchorsong’s ‘Last Feast’ which first brought V.B.Kühl into our orbit here at Kane FM and we’re delighted to have him in as a guest on World Beats with a strictly vinyl mix this week.
